FANATEC GT WORLD CHALLENGE EUROPE POWERED BY AWS – 24-25 AUGUST 2024

PODIUM FINISH FOR DE HAAN AT MAGNY-COURS

The journey to the famous Magny-Cours racing circuit for the fourth round of the Fanatec GT World Challenge Europe powered by AWS Sprint Cup yielded another podium (in Race 2) for Sam De Haan-Calan Williams and a handful of good points despite the weekends ups and downs.

Since the beginning of the race weekend, the #30 BMW M4 GT3 had some technical issues and had prevented themfrom doing any running in the paid practice –which would have been essential as Sam and Calan both had done minimal laps around the technical French track.

The 10-minute qualifying session for Race 1 saw Calan Williams take P5 in the Silver Cup.

At the start of a thrilling night race, Calan kept the 5th position. Williams pitted on Lap 18, and received a typically rapid service from the Team WRT pit-crew, while handing the controls to Sam De Haan. Sam retained the position and finished in P5 in the Silver Cup.

Qualifying for Race 2 saw Sam taking P5. It was by no means a straightforward session. There was a red flag before anyone had completed a flying lap after the #12 and #21 had made contact at the final corner. Sam had a rear left puncture which hampered the run and he only got 1 lap at the very end with cold tyres.

The 60-minute contest provided action from start to finish. The #30 BMW M4 GT3 started far back in the race and it was a real struggle to move forward. Sam started fighting and gained a few positions and with a clean pit stop managed a podium in the end.

The title will be decided at the Sprint Cup finale, which takes place at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya on 11-13 October. Before that, the Endurance Cup will be back in action with a three-hour race at historic Monza over the weekend of 20-22 September.

Sam De Haan: “Overall, a very tricky weekend for us with the car and track. Unfortunately for race 2, I had a fairly simple stint as I was behind the safety car for most of it. But with the crew’s strong pit stop and Calan’s solid stint, we made it to the podium. Hopefully, we can hit the ground running in Barcelona and seal the Silver championship with a pair of good results.”
