FANATEC GT WORLD CHALLENGE EUROPE POWERED BY AWS  – 18-19 MAY 2024

SAM DE HAAn posted a double win and reinforced his leadership in the silver cup standings

Sam De Haan and Calan Williams lived an unforgettable weekend at Misano in the third round of the 2024Fanatec GT World Challenge Europe powered by AWS – Sprint Cup, bringing home two more titles!

It has been a very good weekend for Sam De Haan and Team WRT BMW under the Italian sun on the Adriatic shore at Misano in the second round of the GTWCE Sprint Cup.

The event began with an action packed one hour and 40 minutes of Free Practice, and the session was just half an hour old when the #71 crashed heavily at Turn 4 causing a red flag, which temporarily suspended the session. Finally, the green flag waved at 10:20am, which should have left only 20 minutes before the chequered flag. However, a new timetable allowed for 15 minutes of Bronze and Silver running, followed by another hour with the full field on-track.

Running for the hour, Pre-Qualifying was in effect an extra practice session, though it could also be used to decide the grid should the main Qualifying be cancelled.

The Silver Cup pole went to the #30 Team WRT BMW driven by Calan Williams, who did a fine job to qualify 5th overall and ahead of several Pro cars! Sam posting an excellent P2 for second race.

In Race 1, Calan took the start from pole and maintained his advantage into the opening sequence of corners. He hadrun at the front of the Silver Cup before being taken over by Sam. The British driver came under late pressure but delivered the car in P1. A fantastic drive and result.

This was an impressive drive from the pair, resulting in a truly dominant win and earned 6th overall.

Sam and Calan went one better under the lights at the Adriatic venue in the next race. Race 2 began in rapidly fading light; the sun having set half an hour before the action got underway. The start of the second race saw no problems forSam and Calan, and a safety-car period had to start before the end of lap 1 because of the Aston Martin had spinned and stopped on track.

The restart was perfectly handled by Sam, who progressively built a gap in his stint and pitted on Lap 20 and handedover to Calan. The #30 secured another victory in the Silver Cup and a top 10 finish overall, ending with a run of foursuccessive podiums for the squad. A mighty achievement!

The Sprint Cup campaign moves to Germany and resumes at Hockenheim, staging the fifth and sixth races of the season over the weekend of 19–21 July.

“Feeling great after what has to be one of the best weekends we’ve had on track in a long time. The car felt dialed in from day one. Calan and I made significant progress throughout the practice sessions. Qualifying was outstanding for Calan, and despite our second set of tires being slightly out of the optimal range during my sessions, we still achieved a strong result overall.

Both races were executed perfectly by the team, with rapid pit stops once again. Not much to report from on track—we kept our noses clean and avoided track limit violations, which allowed us to fight at the front throughout. We couldn’t have asked for anymore than 2 class wins from 2 races and a championship lead heading to the next round. We’re taking a small break now before the big one: Spa24!”
