FANATEC GT WORLD CHALLENGE EUROPE POWERED BY AWS – 21-22 september 2024

HIStoric victory for SAm de haan at monza as oq by oman racing secures incredible overall triumph

History was made in Fanatec GT World Challenge Europe Powered by AWS Endurance Cup event at Monza when OQ by Oman Racing became the first team from outside the Pro class to secure overall victory.

In what could be remembered as the series’ most dramatic and unpredictable race, the Bronze Cup crew of Sam De Haan, Ahmad Al Harthy and Jens Klingmann delivered a masterclass aboard the #30 BMW M4 GT3 to beat the biggest names in the business to outright honours.

The Temple of Speed has a new place on the calendar this year, moving from its familiar spring date to late September. It falls at a crucial time in the campaign, launching the final push for title glory.

Preparation for the race weekend went well, with the #30 squad just 0.6 seconds away from the quickest overall time in free practice. Final qualifying on Sunday morning, run across three sessions for the trio of drivers, concluded with OQ by Oman Racing sixth fastest in Bronze and 29th on the overall grid from 52 cars.

The unpredictable three-hour race was shaped by a new rule mandating an extra pit stop, which turned the competition into a strategic battle between speed and pit-lane tactics. When a chaotic opening lap with a series of multi-car incidents saw the #30 BMW M4 GT3 decided to pit for strategy.

After the decision by the team to pit multiple times under the early Safety Car to get into the mandatory pit-stops, De Haan was at the tail of the field and with significant work to do. During the opening hour he carved through impressively, ultimately rising into fifth and the Bronze lead.

Al Harthy got behind the wheel early in hour two and was third in class and 24th overall when he joined the race. Totally out of sequence with the competition, it mattered not as the signs were good for the strategy to work in their favour.

When he handed over to Klingmann for the final hour, Jens was extremely well placed and just 10 minutes later he had risen to the class lead and an incredible third overall.

Driving superbly against Vanthoor (#32) and Pier Guidi (#51), Jens took the lead and secured overall victory.

Sam De Haan: “What a day! We owe today to Team WRT. The strategy was a master stroke. The car was a joy. To drive across a stint which helped us deliver consistent pace throughout the race. Thanks to my engineer Will and thanks to the team! Mega!”
