fanatec gt world challenge europe powered by aws – 4-5 MAY 2024

It was a great start to the 2024 Sprint Cup season for Sam De Haan at Brands Hatch, as he and his teammate Calan Williams raced to second and third, capturing two podium finishes at the historic British track.

One month after the season opening round of the Endurance Cup, it was time for the Sprint Cup, another thrilling race series under the umbrella of the Fanatec GT World Challenge Europe powered by AWS. Round 2 played host to one of the most legendary tracks in motorsport, Brands Hatch.

The competition built on two one-hour races, this year promises to be as competitive and as exciting as its sister series. To say that Brands Hatch is a special place is an understatement. The 4.207km track in Kent is probably the track that has changed the least over the decades and is, therefore, a fantastic sample of what motor racing was like in older times.

The Team WRT was at ease on the British track since free practice, with the #30 car taking P4 in Pre-qualifying.

On Saturday, Qualifying confirmed the good mood, with Calan signing his first pole of the year and Sam taking P5 for Race 2 in the Silver Cup.

Race one, and with no major incidents, was a typical Brands Hatch race with almost no possibility to overtake. Calanwas in control and stabilised his first position after the start before Sam taking over the wheel for the next stint. He managed to contest the lead of the race but after hitting some traffic couldn’t materialise the victory despite keepingvery close to the leaders crossing the chequered flag, only seconds behind for P2 in the Silver Cup.

Determined to improve, Sam was first behind the wheel for Race 2 and had a brilliant stint. He gained a position before pitting on lap 22. The pit-stops were perfectly executed and this allowed Calan to keep P3, whilst resisting all attacks in the last quarter of the race to take their second podium of the season!

The Sprint Cup in the Fanatec GT World Challenge Europe powered by AWC is heading to the coast of the Adriatic sea for one of its most traditional summer rendez-vous, at Misano, the third (second sprint) round of the season on May 18th-19th.

Overall a good first Sprint weekend. Calan had a clean stint in Race 1it’s super difficult to overtake around BrandsHatch so after the first lap you end up just sat in the train. However, the guys at WRT had a great pitstop which allowed us to jump some positions in the stops. Afterwards, I had a pretty clean stint myself, we got quite unlucky during one of the safety car restarts due to a back marker blocking me in the last sector, which effectively cost us the win in class. Still we were all happy with the strong pace and a P2 finish.

In Race 2 we were lucky to keep our noses pretty clean throughout both stints. Our pitstop was strong which allowed us to again jump some positions. Calan and I both showed strong pace even in the traffic, bringing us a P3 finish in class at the flag. Eyes forward to Misano!
