EUROPEAN Le Mans Series – 15 may 2022

totalenergies 24 hours of spa effort confirmed with barwell motorsport

Sam De Haan will add to his European race calendar with confirmation he will contest the TotalEnergies 24 Hours of Spa next month, in a Lamborghini Huracan GT3 Evo. Returning to the event for a second consecutive season, Sam is joined by his European Le Mans Series teammate Ahmad Al Harthy alongside Alex MacDowall and factory driver Sandy Mitchell in the Barwell Motorsport-run effort.

Fresh off the back of the ELMS race win at Imola last month, Sam rejoins the Barwell Motorsport team for this one-off Fanatec GT World Challenge Europe powered by AWS entry. Having made his GT3 debut with the team in 2018, they then combined to secure British GT Pro-Am honours just a year later. These results all came at the wheel of the Lamborghini Huracan GT3, so Sam is no stranger to the Italian model. He will now combine as part of the strong Gold Cup line-up in the #77 Black Bull Whisky / Amstutz Produckte-backed entry.

Sam explained:

“The TotalEnergies 24 Hours of Spa is the big one. It’s the one that everyone involved GT3 competition wants to win and is a huge challenge for every part of the team. It’s hard on the drivers, it breaks cars, and it is at one of the best circuits in the world. To be involved in it is incredible, and to win it would be the cherry on the cake.

We are going there this year with proven race winners and one clear aim. Barwell Motorsport has won the event on several occasions, and what they don’t know about racing a Lamborghini isn’t worth knowing. It is great to be joining Alex and Sandy who have been running with the team and had a strong result last time out at Ricard, and to be back racing with Ahmad who has previously stood on the top step of the Spa podium. For me, personally, it is the next big challenge and I have never been more determined.”

Barwell Motorsport has an enviable record at the twice-around-the-clock headline GT3 endurance event, and the team is looking to return to the top step with the aim of adding a Gold Cup win as a fourth different class result. The British-based team previously claimed Am Cup, Silver Cup and Pro-Am Cup titles over consecutive seasons between 2018 and 2020.

Mark Lemmer, Barwell Motorsport team principal, added:

“It’s great to welcome Sam back to Barwell, we have been talking about it for a while now. And it will be really interesting to see how Ahmad gets on with the mid-engined Lamborghini, he’s a class act and I’m sure it won’t take him long to adapt. Combined with Alex and Sandy and our Huracan GT3 Evo, we have all the tools needed to fight for victory in the Gold Cup.”

Sam will join the team next week for the championship’s two-day official test at Spa-Francorchamps. The race event then follows next month, over the weekend 27-31 July.
